Virtual Bridges to Global Learning: Enhancing Intercultural Skills via Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) in Colombian Universities
The goal of this short presentation is to share about the implementation and characteristics of the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) approach in higher education institutions across Colombia. With a focus on enhancing intercultural competence and global learning, COIL allows students to engage with peers from diverse backgrounds without the financial burdens of international travel. Utilizing a grounded theory methodology, the present qualitative exploratory research employed digital surveys, narratives, and documentary analyses involving participants from both public and private universities. Findings reveal that COIL fosters respect, empathy, and inclusivity among students while enhancing critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills. Despite its benefits, challenges such as technological barriers and time zone differences persist, highlighting the need for effective strategies to maximize COIL’s potential. Ultimately, this study underscores COIL's transformative role in democratizing access to international education in Colombia, equipping students with essential skills for the globalized workforce. Through meaningful intercultural interactions, COIL promotes a rich cultural exchange, contributing to the development of global citizens ready to tackle contemporary challenges.
