Online Language Learning Through eTwinning Projects

Since 2004, eTwinning has provided an online space for teachers and school organizations to develop and collaborate on projects, both nationally and internationally. As an initiative of the European Commission, eTwinning aims to inspire European schools, from primary schools to universities, to connect using Information and Communication Technologies, by using their online platform. As an English teacher in Slovakia, eTwinning has allowed me to form projects with English teachers from other universities throughout Europe, where our students have teamed together to create the final products of these projects. The aim of this paper is to elaborate on the benefits of eTwinning projects in language classrooms and how they are significant to intercultural and language communication. Not only does eTwinning utilize online technology for learning and collaboration, but it also provides a safe environment to do so, especially since access is provided to only those in the educational sphere. In the paper, I will provide examples of various projects that I have been a part of since 2020, to illustrate the benefits of its use for students. The main benefit focused on will be language learning, although there are other important skills learned including communication, collaboration and creative thinking.
